Article: Newborn Essentials Checklist: What You Really Need

Newborn Essentials Checklist: What You Really Need

👶 Skip the Overwhelm, Start with What Matters

Welcoming a new baby is one of life’s most exciting—and overwhelming—experiences. From endless product lists to crowded registries, it’s hard to know what you actually need, especially when everything is labeled “must-have.”

At Honey and Hive, we believe in simplicity, functionality, and thoughtful essentials. So here’s our curated checklist of what truly matters during those early newborn days.

🧺 1. Soft, Easy-to-Wear Clothing

You don’t need 30 outfits. What you need are:

  • 5–7 onesies or bodysuits (long and short sleeve)

  • 3–4 footed sleepers or rompers

  • 2–3 two-piece sets (for layering or outings)

  • 1–2 cardigans or soft jackets (seasonal)

  • Cotton beanies and scratch mittens (for warmth & safety)

✔️ Tip: Choose breathable, organic fabrics like cotton rib or modal. They’re gentle on sensitive skin and regulate temperature naturally.

🛁 2. Bath & Skincare Basics

Keep it minimal and clean:

  • 2–3 hooded towels

  • Soft washcloths

  • Fragrance-free baby body wash

  • Gentle moisturizer or baby oil

  • Diaper rash cream

✔️ Avoid overly perfumed or chemical-heavy products. Simpler is safer.

🎒 3. Diapering Essentials

Whether you use cloth or disposable, have on hand:

  • Diapers (size newborn and size 1)

  • Natural, unscented baby wipes

  • Changing pad or mat

  • Portable diaper caddy or storage basket

🍼 4. Feeding Must-Haves

Whether breastfeeding or bottle feeding:

  • 5–6 burp cloths

  • 3–4 bibs

  • Nursing pillow

  • Bottles + cleaning brush

  • Milk storage bags (if pumping)

✔️ Optional: Nursing bras and nipple cream for mom comfort.

💤 5. Sleep Essentials

Forget the fancy gear—you’ll mostly need:

  • 2–3 swaddles or sleep sacks

  • Bassinet or crib with firm mattress

  • Fitted crib sheets (2–3)

  • White noise machine (optional but helpful)

🎁 6. The Extras You’ll Actually Use

  • Pacifiers (every baby’s different!)

  • Stroller blanket

  • Baby carrier or wrap

  • Diaper bag

  • Soft toys or lovey (optional in first months)

💛 What You Don’t Need (Yet)

You can skip:

  • Shoes (socks are enough!)

  • Wipe warmers

  • Fancy clothes with snaps/buttons everywhere

  • Every gadget on TikTok
